Cate Blanchett and her husband reportedly wanted a daughter to “even out the household”.

Last week it was confirmed that the 45-year-old actress and her spouse Andrew Upton have adopted a baby girl, who they have called Edith Vivian Patricia Upton. The tot will be a little sister for the couple’s sons Dashiell (13) Roman, ten and six-year-old Ignatius.

“They wanted another baby, and especially wanted a girl to even out the household,” a source told Us Weekly magazine.

Edith joined the family with no public fanfare. In fact, it was only revealed that Cate had become a mother again after she was spotted carrying the tot in an airport as she jetted between Los Angeles and Sydney.

“[Cate] looked very natural and relaxed with the baby,” a witness said. “She was very cuddly. There was no indication that Cate needed another set of hands to help her. The baby didn’t seem to cry once throughout the whole trip!”

Over the weekend Andrew said the whole family is “thrilled” with the new arrival, but didn’t elaborate further.

Cate has spoken about being a mother in the past, and in 2010 she said she’d love a daughter but it equally wasn’t something she obsessed about.

“It’s true you do get a bit demented [with three boys],” she laughed to W magazine. “The chaos of it is great.

“Everyone says, ‘Oh, you must have [been trying] to have a girl.’ If the next one was a boy, then that’s just our lot!”

The actress is starring as stepmother Lady Tremaine in Cinderella, and has relished the opportunity to get her teeth stuck into the dastardly character. She previously joked that she will make her sons watch the live action retelling of the fairytale, especially as it was so much fun to shoot.

“Certainly when you get to play someone who has ‘Wicked’ in front of her name, you know it's going to be slightly fun,” she told E!

“But I was too old for Cinderella and not funny enough for the godmother, and so I got what was leftover! In a way you can dare yourself to see how far you can stretch it. The boundaries are not as marked.”
