CD: Leonard Cohen - Old Ideas

The ladies’ man returns and this time the 77-year-old poet-singer ponders mortality.

Many of the songs are spoken rather than sung, the melodies fleshed out by an ethereal-sounding female choir.

On Amen a mournful banjo tickles the rhythm as it ambles along. Anyhow has a light, jazzy piano riff and that female choir, but it’s another great Cohen reflection on broken hearts.

It might be Old Ideas but no one does universal themes – love, forgiveness and death – as well.
