Cellphone con: how to stop it using your airtime

If you’ve fallen for the new cellphone con doing the rounds here’s advice. The con binds you to a subscription service that will cost you R7 a day in airtime if you don’t stop it.

The procedure to stop the con is different for each cellphone network. Such cons make use of WASP services, so you must actively stop all the WASP subscriptions on your number.

For Vodacom users

  • To unsubscribe from all WASP services send an SMS with “STOP ALL” to 30333.
  • If you are subscribed to WASP services you then should receive the SMS response: “Your Vodacom request to delete all WASP service has been logged”. You should then receive a confirmation message for each service you have been unsubscribed from: “You have been unsubscribed from ‘SERVICE’ with effect from ‘DATE’”.
  • If you receive an SMS indicating that your unsubscribe request was unsuccessful then you were not subscribed to a WASP service.
  • If the problem persists, call the Vodacom Call Centre on 111.

For MTN users

  • Using the USSD string *141*5# you can manage premium content subscriptions. You can view, activate or cancel any WASP subscriptions.
  • If the problem persists, call the MTN Call Centre on 173.

For Cell C users

  • Using the USSD string *133*1#, you can block all existing content billing. There is also an option to block any future subscription services.
  • If the problem persists, call the Cell C Call Centre on 140.

For Telkom Mobile users

  • Contact the Telkom Mobile call centre on 180 to cancel a subscription.
