Charlize: Monster broke the mould

Charlize Theron thinks the Monster backers thought they were getting "a hot lesbian love story".

The 2003 movie saw Charlize play real-life prostitute Aileen Wuornos, who became a serial killer. She piled on 28lbs.(12kgs) for the part and was seen with bad skin, teeth and hair, with her performance earning her the best actress Oscar. Despite that, Charlize is in no doubt that the film wasn't want many people expected.

"There wasn't anything that I was not willing to do in order to get to that place. I think the financiers thought they were paying for a hot lesbian love story: me and Christina Ricci. I don't think they had any idea what Patty [Jenkins, director] and I were really planning," she laughed to British magazine Elle.

One of the issues was that the movie was so different to Charlize's big screen debut, 2 Days in the Valley. That flick was promoted with giant pictures of the actress in lacy lingerie, something she didn't know was going to happen - and wasn't that happy about.

"Someone thought it was a good idea to market almost the entire movie on me; objectifying me a little bit. I got a lot of attention from it, but the problem was that, afterwards, it was like, 'We want you to do that again. Can you just do that?' And so I didn't work for almost two years," she explained.

That would have turned many people off the industry, but the star doesn't think that way. She prefers to consider what everything that has happened in her life has taught her, and she is proud not to have been pushed around.

"For me, the greatest success of my life, and something that I am really proud of, is that I can honestly, honestly say that I have lived my life - through my career, or through love, or through friendships, or through relationships - I have lived my life authentically to me. Meaning, I take full ownership in all of my decision making. And some of it was really bad, and some of it was really good," she said.
