Chicken with green beans wrapped in bacon

Sometimes food takes a little bit longer to prepare - but the results are absolutely worth it

Serves 6

Preparation time: 15 min  

Marinating time: 30 min or overnight

Cooking time: 1 hour

8 chicken pieces


30 ml (2 T) honey

3 cm fresh ginger, grated

3 garlic cloves, crushed

5 ml (1 t) Chinese five spice mix

10 ml (2 t) soy sauce

45 ml (3 T) orange marmalade

2 ml (½ t) grated orange zest

15 m (1 T) sesame oil


150 g streaky bacon

25 g green beans

20 g butter, melted and mixed with minced garlic

1    Slash the chicken drumsticks three to four times each with a sharp knife and put in a non-metal bowl.

2    Marinade: Mix all the ingredients and pour over the chicken. Leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes or preferably overnight, turning occasionally.

3    Preheat the oven to 200 °C.

4    Transfer the chicken to a baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes, brushing with any marinade left in the dish as it cooks.

5    Beans: Wrap a rasher of bacon around 3-4 beans and brush with garlic butter. Repeat with the remaining beans and bacon. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until the bacon is done to your liking

6    Serve the chicken with the beans and pap or mashed potatoes.
