Chris Hemsworth has revealed the somewhat unromantic way he proposed to wife Elsa Pataky.

The couple started dating in early 2010 and tied the knot in December that year. Chris admits the nuptials weren't planned, and neither was his proposal - both of which took place during a holiday to the island of Sumba in Indonesia.

"I guess so (it was love at first sight)," Chris told Good Morning Britain on Thursday. "It did happen quick and it just felt right. It made sense and there was no great plan with any of it, to be honest. We were on holiday and I said, 'Why don't we get married too?' And the next minute...

"There probably should have been some planning but it all worked out. To be honest we had a holiday with both our families at the same time, just randomly. And we said, 'This is a good opportunity, we've got everyone together, let's do it!' And we just did it!"

The pair have three children together - three-year-old daughter India and two-year-old twin sons Tristan and Sasha. His family help keep Chris grounded, and there's nothing he loves more than returning to his brood after some time away with work.

"Absolutely (having kids) means it's not about you anymore, which is refreshing. My kids are hilarious, insane, crazy - you go from press tours and work and whatever and then straight back into reality," he laughed. "Being handed a child in a nappy usually brings you back to reality!"

Chris' latest movie is The Huntsman: Winter's War, but he is perhaps most well-known for his role as the hammer-wielding superhero Thor.

His children aren't the biggest fan of the merchandise surrounding the Marvel franchise and their dad's character however.

"Disney will send us little boxes of merchandise and things after the tour and I think my kids end up feeding it to the dog or something - there's usually missing arms and limbs and things..." he joked.
