Convicted killer Clive Derby-Lewis is dead.

His wife Gaye Derby-Lewis confirmed to Afrikaans news outlet Maroela Media the 80-year-old died this afternoon, after a battle with lung cancer.

Derby-Lewis had served 21 years in prison when he was released on medical parole last year. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2014.

The former Conservative Party politician found guilty of the 1993 murder of Chris Hani.

Hani, who was a South African Communist Party general secretary and chief of staff of the ANC’s military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), was shot outside his home by Walus with a gun arranged by Derby-Lewis in Boksburg on April 10, 1993.

Derby-Lewis and Janusz Walus were originally sentenced to death for the killing, but their sentence was converted to life in prison after South Africa abolished the death penalty in 1995.
