Friends and family are devastated by the senseless murder of the former boxer

In his last SMS to her Corrie Sanders promised he’d be home soon. But just nine minutes later an armed robber’s bullet fatally wounded the South African boxing legend and former world champion in the stomach during an attack on a restaurant in Brits, North West.

“I so wanted to be with him while he was lying there in such pain,” says Elsabé Gouws, his partner of two years. “I can’t stop wondering what he was thinking about.”

Tears pour down her cheeks as she speaks. Corrie (46) died hours after the shooting in Kalafong Hospital, Pretoria.

Elsabé (44) and her son, David (10), planned to accompany Corrie to dinner at the restaurant in Brits that Saturday evening to celebrate his nephew’s 21st birthday.

But that afternoon she felt ill so he left her home in Centurion on his own at about 4 pm. “He didn’t want to leave me alone but he didn’t want to disappoint the family either.”
