Criminal - Karin Slaughter

Karin Slaughter keeps readers guessing with her latest chilling offering.

Rated: 3/5

This top thriller-writer enjoys working with her regular set of characters, with each one getting a turn to be the centre of attention. Her previous book, Fallen, focused on Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agent Faith Mitchell and her mother, Evelyn, a former policewoman, and now it’s the turn of Faith’s GBI partner, Will Trent (my favourite of these characters), who grew up in a series of children’s homes and won’t talk about what was clearly a tragic past.

The novel begins as Will’s father, imprisoned years ago for murder, is about to be released. It jumps back and forth from the present to the ’70s when Will was born and his boss, Amanda Wagner, and her friend Evelyn Mitchell were starting their careers in a sexist and racist police force in Atlanta. This is also Amanda’s story and a chance to find out more about this hard woman who seems to go out of her way to be nasty to Will yet is also oddly fond of him.

Criminal is dark and grisly and speeds along at Slaughter’s usual thriller pace. I can’t wait for the next instalment.
