'Dad, I'm sorry you had to go but you wanted to': Kylie and Jordan's heartrending letters to their dad

Joost was honoured in moving letters from his loved ones at his private memorial service this morning.

Joost's loved ones said their final goodbyes to the rugby icon at his private memorial service at a church in Pretoria on Friday.

The service, which precedes the public tribute service at 12.30 pm at Loftus, was attended by his closest family as well as others like; Heyneke Meyer, James Small and his first wife, Marlene Duvenhage.

Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen (45), who lost the fight to motor neuron disease (MND) on Monday while surrounded by family, was honoured in moving letters from his family members.

His son, Jordan (13), wrote the following alongside a photo of them together: "Dear Daddy, thank you for everything but most of for "Be the best dad can be!'

"You are the best rugby player of the world! I want to be the best sportman like you, because you said I must work hard!! I will always love you to the moon and back. Daddy please tell God that Liverpool must win. You will never walk alone! I love you so much, Jordan."


Kylie (10) wrote: "Dad, I'm sorry you had to go but you wanted to. I know you are having a blast in heaven. Love #1Dad. You will always be in my heart.

"I love you and no one will ever change that. I will never forget you, you will always be by my side. Remember you mean tbe world to me. I love you, from Kylie."

In front a large screen played a slideshow of photos of Joost and his loved ones.

After the coffin was carried into the church, there was a moment of silence for the beloved South African sports icon.
