Actress Daisy Ridley couldn't help but baby talk to her "small and cute" robot on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

The British star has landed the role of a lifetime as Rey in the upcoming sci-fi flick, joining original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. J.J. Abrams helms the movie and had to be strict when reminding Daisy that her android sidekick is a serious character, as the actress kept forgetting that.

'The impulse is to baby talk'

“I had a chat with (the robot) BB-8, and I remember J.J. saying, ‘He’s not a child,’ and obviously the impulse because he’s small and cute is to infantilise," she recalled to Time magazine. "The impulse is to baby talk, but he’s not a child. He’s a droid with a mission.

“But after they created him and puppeted him every day and they gave him so much life that it didn’t really feel any different to acting with a person. He’s there moving around, he’s making noises, he’s responding to what I’m saying. It really is just like having a conversation.”

Daisy recently watched the finished piece, which also features new stars including Adam Driver and Domhnall Gleeson, for the first time in Los Angeles. It was an amazing moment as she sat alongside Adam and Carrie, with the 23-year-old describing the experience as a "sensory overload".

Fellow newcomer John Boyega, who plays storm trooper Finn, was also blown away when viewing the final cut, telling USA Today: "I was holding my own hand and then my face was actually wide-eyed and numb for a bit, as if I'd just had a tooth out. There was loads of 'Woops!', loads of hollering, a lot of me kicking things around and freaking out. It's a good movie."
