Dakota Johnson and Melanie Griffith experienced a bit of an awkward moment at the Oscars.

The 25-year-old actress, who is the daughter of Melanie and Don Johnson, shot to fame after starring in kinky film Fifty Shades of Grey, which is based on the erotic novel by E.L. James.

Dakota walked the 87th Academy Awards red carpet with her mother and it appeared as if the duo tensed up as they spoke with ABC’s Lara Spencer about whether or not Melanie has even watched Fifty Shades of Grey yet.

'If she tells me to see it, I'll see it'

“I don't think I can. I think it would be strange,” Melanie said, with Dakota responding quickly and defensively, “No, I don't think so. I think it's fine. I think that one day you would see it."

Journalist Lara complimented Dakota on her performance in the feature in a perceived effort to ease the tension.

However, this interview manoeuvre only seemed to exacerbate the situation.

"Well, she's a really good actress. I don't need to see that to know how good she is,” Melanie noted, before Dakota snapped and said, “Alright, you don't have to see it. I'm like you can see it, and you're just like 'Nooooo.'"

Erotic thriller Fifty Shades features many scenes where Dakota is engaged in extreme sexual exploits.

But she doesn’t think the scenes are too kinky for her mother to watch.

"I think it's okay. It's a movie she knows that,” Dakota noted.

After eyerolls were made, it seemed as if Melanie was willing to actually take the time to watch her daughter’s film.

"If she tells me to see it, I'll see it,” the 57-year-old said.
