The 22-year-old tumbled 70 m to her death.

A Danish woman’s hike ended in tragedy this past weekend after she fell off a cliff edge in the Karoo.

The woman went hiking with her Spanish friend close to Nieu-Bethesda in the Eastern Cape when she fell down a ravine.

Emergency workers managed to recover her body late on Monday, reports Herald Live.

“Two adults walked a hiking trail along the highest peak in Nieu-Bethesda late on Sunday afternoon when a 22-year-old female, Karoline Bolvig Klindt, ended up falling about 70 m from a ledge,” says police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni.

“It's believed that she rolled about another 10 m before coming to a halt just above a ravine.”

Karoline’s friend Héctor Grau Bolívar apparently went to find help at a farm about 5 km from where the incident took place.

“The conditions weren't favourable, and with the darkness and steep and challenging terrain police members worked tirelessly until she was found on Sunday at 10.40 pm. The body was recovered on Monday 31 October.”

“The ministry of foreign affairs can confirm that a Danish woman has passed away in South Africa,” Karina Hedemark, a spokesperson for the Danish consulate, told YOU. “The next of kin have been informed.”

Karoline and Héctor apparently embarked on their hike from Ganora Guestfarm, reports Herald Live.

Héctor has been sharing photos of his travels on Instagram over the past few weeks. He shared this picture, which was taken at Nieu-Bethesda, roughly a week ago. It's not clear if he and Karoline were travelling together.

The community in and around Nieu-Bethesda were rocked by the incident, with one member, Charmaine Haines, writing on Facebook that a helicopter flew around for hours, while emergency workers tried to get to Karoline’s body.

Jason Du Preez of Graaff-Reinet said he met Karoline during her visit and she'd wanted him to take her and Hector out on a canoe to see the wildlife this past weekend. “But I couldn’t because unfortunately I was busy.”

According to Jason even the community of Graaff-Reinet is deeply shocked by the tragedy.

A manager at Ganora Guestfarm wouldn't comment on the incident.
