Céline Dion's husband René Angélil died on Thursday after a long battle with throat cancer.

“René Angélil passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer,” his rep said in a statement on Thursday.

“The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time.”

The 73-year-old, who has served as Céline's manager and mentor, has battled several bouts of cancer since his first diagnosis in 1999. This has led Céline, his wife of 21 years, to put her career on hold in order to take care of him.

"I am scared of losing him, because it's bad," she told PEOPLE in March. "But I have to show myself, my husband and my kids that I'm strong and we're okay."

René is survived by the couple’s three children – René-Charles (14) and 5-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy. He also has three children from previous relationships – Patrick, Jean-Pierre, and Anne-Marie. Since the news of his death reached, the stars have taken to Twitter to show their support for the singer and her family. a class="twitter-grid" href="">René Angélil
