Prince Charles nearly left Diana in the lurch at the altar, a new book claims.

This shocking allegation has been made in Catherine Mayer’s recently published unofficial biography of the future king of England, Charles: Heart Of A King.
'I can’t go through with it. I can’t do it'

The Prince of Wales, whom Mayer refers to as the ‘Prince of Wails’, was in such a turmoil about his impending marriage he nearly called the whole thing off, just a day before the wedding on 29 July, 1981.

Charles apparently told an insider he was “desperate”, it’s alleged in the book.

The Daily Telegraph reveals the prince apparently told the insider, “I can’t go through with it... I can’t do it.”

According to Mayer, Charles said that the future mother of his children “was not the jolly country girl he’d assumed she was”.

Instead, he was slowly discovering that the woman he had been engaged to for five months was vulnerable, complicated, and already battling an eating disorder.

Prince Charles, now married to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, wasn't the only one who reportedly had cold feet.

Diana told her biographer Andrew Morton she’d confessed to her sisters, “I can’t marry him, I can’t do this, this is absolutely unbelievable.”

They told her it was too late to change her mind because “your face is [already] on the tea towels”. Mayer says, “She had no idea her bridegroom also had to be coaxed to the altar.”

Clarence House, meanwhile have rubbished much of what is in the book, insisting that Mayer had never been given ‘exclusive’ access to Charles or any other palace insider.
