A dog is recovering after being plucked from a swollen river in a dramatic air rescue.

On Friday afternoon people spotted the poor pooch floating down the Los Angeles River.

Eyewitnesses said the dog, a Shiba Inu, was swept downstream for about 1,6 km near the Burbank border in California.

During the rescue effort which was caught on video, a Los Angeles firefighter, fastened to a cable, was lowered into the river before swimming to the dog.

The camera then focuses on the shivering animal.

The seven-year-old dog, which was not microchipped, was in a state of shock, but is well on the road to recovery. Lucky, as the dog has been named, has still not been claimed.
