Doting new dad Graeme Smith

He’s more accustomed to wielding a cricket bat than cradling a newborn baby but if Proteas captain Graeme Smith’s ease with his tiny daughter is anything to go by he’ll be equally good at fatherhood.

The Graeme we meet today is beaming with parental pride. Gone is the gum-chewing, calculating cricketer who recently helmed his team in its crushing defeat of England in the first Test of the current series.

In his place stands a man who, it has to be said, is bowled over by the new maiden in his life.

It’s been three days since Cadence Christine Smith arrived in the world and we’re meeting the family at the Alphen Hotel in Constantia, Cape Town.

Graeme’s wife, Irish pop singer Morgan Deane (28), is looking lovely: she had a Caesarean section and although she’s still in pain she’s all smiles as she and Graeme (31) chat about their firstborn.

“We waited so long for Cadence to arrive and now she’s here it almost feels surreal,” Graeme says. “It’s like being in a state of constant amazement. We’re truly blessed.”
