Staid new Toyota RAV4 is still a versatile family option.

Model: Toyota RAV4 2,5 Auto VX

Toyota’s RAV4 has been a popular choice in the SUV segment of the market, but the fourth generation RAV4 is very different animal from the original model. The first RAV4 of the ’90s had a cute appearance while the latest version is more conservative.

Today’s low-profile RAV4 has the look of a station wagon that’s had a dose of steroids. But we like the car’s looks and it feels good and sturdy. The interior space is ample and the 476-litre luggage room a plus. It also boasts a keyless access system, leather finish, a sound system with a touch-screen and heated seats. The ride and handling don’t disappoint and the sound insulation is reasonable. The top model, which is the one we drove, has four-wheel-drive and the six-speed automatic gearbox is as smooth as silk. A pleasant surprise was that the steering is light for a vehicle this size. The RAV4 will appeal to families requiring a safe, reliable vehicle that’s perfect both for daily use and longer distances.
