Sex and the City may have given chick-flicks a bad name but this movie about bridesmaid rivalry repairs the damage.

It’s one of the year’s funniest, smartest films and should make the talented Kristen Wiig a major star.

Thirty-something Annie’s (Wiig) life is falling apart – she has lost her business and boyfriend, can’t pay her rent or fix her car and her new lover treats her like dirt.

The only upside is her best friend, Lillian (Rudolph), is getting married and has asked her to be maid of honour.

But then Lillian’s other best friend, Helen (Byrne) – prettier, richer, classier and more together – steals her thunder with gifts, parties and dresses Annie can’t compete with. The claws come out.

That’s just the plot but this movie is loaded with wonderful characters – among them O’Dowd as an eccentric cop and McCarthy as a scarily butch bridesmaid – and classic laugh-out-loud scenes.

Great comedy with a heart.

Bonus: gag reel, featurettes, commentary, deleted scenes.
