With Robert Downey Jnr and Zach Galifianakis.

Director: Todd Phillips.

Rating: 3/5

This road movie comedy reunites The Hangover’s weirdy-beardy star Zach Galifianakis with director Todd Phillips and adds Robert Downey Jnr to their winning combination.

But it’s not the raucous, ribald gem that The Hangover was, nor does it have the good-natured lunacy of Phillips’ earlier Will Ferrell outing, Old School.

As in the ’80s classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles this odd couple – Ethan (Galifianakis), an oddball, dagga-smoking would-be actor, and Peter (Downey Jnr), an irritable architect trying to get home to his wife who’s due to give birth – bicker, bond and mostly upset each other as they make their way from one side of the US to the other.

When Galifianakis and Downey Jnr’s gags work they’re brilliant together but the laughs don’t come as fast, furiously or consistently as in The Hangover.

That said this film’s supporting cast, which includes Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis and Phillips himself, deliver wonderfully.

Bonus: deleted scenes.
