Tyler Perry’s latest film is based on the 1975 play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf by Ntozake Shange.

It introduces nine women, each facing her own personal struggle.

Among them are Jo (Jackson), a high-powered magazine editor whose husband is on the brink of revealing a dark secret; Juanita (Devine) who’s caught up in a relationship with a married man; and Kelly (Washington) who has just found out she can’t have children.

The other women’s problems are no less serious – they have to deal with abusive men, rape, an unwanted pregnancy and a seemingly crazy mother.

The film gets pretty dark but is also inspiring as we see the women’s strength prevail.

It’s peppered with poetry and the acting is brilliant but the lengthy scenes can come across as sanctimonious and indulgent.

Perry fans will watch it anyway but avoid if you’re not into seriously dramatic fare.
