Millions of “good” Germans were drawn into Nazism when they found themselves in a country spiralling into terrible chaos before World War 2.

John Halder (Mortensen), an English literature professor, is such a person.

He has a neurotic wife, two obnoxious kids and a mother with Alzheimer’s. Halder writes a book advocating compassionate euthanasia and powerful politicians use the book to support the Nazis’ death camps – which shoots Halder up the ranks in the party.

Life looks good for him – until his best friend, a Jew, asks him to organise travel papers so he can escape the country, and Halder’s decision has a profound effect on many people.

The movie dissects the lives of those who claim they were “just following orders” and resonates with events during South Africa’s apartheid era.

It’s gripping from beginning to end and many critics believe it’s Viggo Mortensen’s finest role. Don’t miss it if you’re a fan of this fine actor.
