With Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett.

Director: Joe Wright.

Rating: 4/5

Arthouse meets action in this unusual thriller about a teen girl, Hanna (Ronan), raised by her ex-spy father, Erik (Bana), in the wilds of Finland to be the perfect killer.

At 16, her training complete, she sets out on the mission she has spent her young life preparing for – to kill Marissa Viegler (Blanchett), a sinister figure from her parents’ past.

The film features a dreamlike mash-up of influences – there are shades of The Professional, the Bourne movies and the Brothers Grimm fairytales – all set to an unusual but memorable score by The Chemical Brothers.

It’s packed with action but doesn’t skimp on comedy either as Hanna takes up with an English family on holiday in Morrocco and Spain and gets a taste of normal life.

Ronan is brilliant as the young assassin, as is Jessica Barden as the teen daughter of the family she hooks up with and who becomes her first real friend.

Bonus: commentary, alternate ending, featurette, deleted scenes.
