With George Clooney, Violante Placido and Thekla Reuten.

Director: Anton Corbijn.

Rating: 4/5

Jack (Clooney) is a hitman on the run from his murderous past.

Hiding out in an Italian village he’s doing what he hopes will be his last job before retiring, making a special rifle for another assassin (Reuten). Or is he being set up as her target?

Meanwhile he falls in love with a local prostitute (Placido) – but is there any hope for them?

Don’t expect a typical Hollywood shoot-’em-up; this is a European-style film without much action or dialogue.

It’s a moody, atmospheric story that, like Sergio Leone’s classic Westerns, takes its sweet time to make its point: that a life of violence begets one and that redemption is hard to come by.

With legendary photographer Corbijn at the helm The American is beautiful to look at, every image perfectly framed and lit. And Clooney is magnificent, making you believe every second of Jack’s anguish.

A sumptuous film.

Bonus: featurette, commentary, deleted scenes.
