To SA journalists from the late ’80s and early ’90sJoao Silva (Van Jaarsveld), Greg Marinovich(Phillippe), Kevin Carter (Kitsch) and Kevin Oosterbroek (Rautenbach) were well known as photographers who captured the country’s political strife.

This film, based on Marinovich and Silva’s book, gives a taste of apartheid’s bloody finale in the townships as experienced by this group who became known as the Bang Bang Club.

Theirs was an adrenaline-fuelled, perilous task.

They were hailed for their work but also attacked from all sides and assailed by doubt – at what point do they stop recording and lend a human hand?

The film excellently highlights this conflict; for the rest it unconvincingly tries to romanticise the photographers’ personal lives.

Phillippe shines as the fearless Marinovich, the only one who survived unscathed – Oosterbroek was killed in Tokoza, Carter committed suicide and Silva lost his legs in a landmine explosion n Afghanistan.
