Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher (MERYL STREEP), now in her eighties, starts to clear out her beloved late husband, Denis’ (JIM BROADBENT), clothes. While doing so she recalls her life and controversial career.

Streep deservedly won her third Oscar for her remarkable performance which dominates this well-crafted film, so much so the other excellent actors don’t get much screen time.

Director Phyllida Lloyd avoids the usual biopic clichés by making inventive use of evocative colours, costumes and framing. The intelligent script creates a rounded portrait of a divisive figure, managing to humanise her while not shying away from the consequences of her conservative politics.
