The adventures of Mma Ramotswe as Botswana’s “first lady detective” are brought lovingly to the screen in this delightful film. As fans of Alexander McCall Smith’s books will know, Mma Ramotswe’s cases aren’t the usual fare of detective action flicks.

The woman with a passion for putting things right in her beloved country uses a mixture of astute observation and intuition to sort out the cheating husbands and “bad daddies” who cross her path.

It’s not all froth and a gentle pace – Mma Ramotswe (beautifully played by singer/actress Jill Scott) is a survivor of abuse whose strong moral compass makes her unswerving in her pursuit of truly bad guys.

But mostly the film (initially a feature-length pilot for a TV series) is light and lovely. The setting in Botswana, familiar local actors and the unmistakably African colours give it texture and authenticity.

And how wonderful to see Africa portrayed so positively – good people leading good lives and standing up for what’s right.
