True-life drama.

2010. 116 min.

With Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer and Justin Timberlake.

Director: David Fincher.

This mesmerising film, based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires, tells the story of how in 2003 Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg (Eisenberg) created a social networking site called Facebook – which in just a few years had more than 500 million users worldwide, making him the youngest billionaire ever.

But while Zuckerberg is a genius programmer he’s a thoroughly nasty character.

Vindictive and cold-hearted he shamelessly steals the idea for Facebook from twins Cameron andTyler Winklevoss (both played by Hammer) and betrays his best friend, Eduardo Saverin(Garfield) – who put up the money to get the site off the ground – after hooking up with internet entrepreneur Sean Parker (Timberlake).

Eisenberg gives the performance of a lifetime as a young man who has everything except friends and the direction and script are top-notch.

With eight Oscar nominations including best picture and best actor (for Eisenberg) this is a fascinating look at recent history.

Bonus: commentary.
