I don’t know anyone who thinks The Tree of Life is so-so. People either hate it, or say it has changed their lives for the better.

It’s an ambitious art film from director Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven) dealing with life’s Big Questions: what and who are we, and why are we here on Earth?

Breathtaking visuals of the evolution of the cosmos are blended into the story of a family living in the ’50s in smalltown Texas.

Everything that happens to them is portrayed in a fairly abstract way – it’s more a concoction of images and emotions than anything else, yet it’s so gripping and satisfying it will broaden your conception of what a film can be.

Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain are good but the unaffected performances by the child actors (Laramie Eppler and Hunter McCracken) are particularly moving.

A must-see.
