With Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins.

Director: Kenneth Branagh.

Rating: 4/5

When arrogant warrior Thor (Hemsworth) breaks the truce between the gods of Asgard and the frost giants his father, King Odin (Hopkins), strips him of his powers and exiles him to Earth – where he meets a scientist (Portman) who helps to teach him humility.

This film about the Marvel Comics superhero with his flowing blond mane and gigantic hammer could so easily have descended into a cheesy, camp farce.

But director Branagh balances the operatic Asgard sequences, played like a Shakespearian drama, with tongue-in-cheek scenes on Earth where everyone finds Thor a bit funny.

Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston, as Thor’s duplicitous brother Loki, are theatre-trained actors who bring conviction to potentially pompous characters, while Hemsworth handles the comedy and romance with confidence.

Fans of Norse mythology will enjoy seeing these neglected gods and their grand realm on the big screen.

Bonus: commentary, deleted scenes, featurette.
