Eight things you should never ever tell your hairdresser

"I'm running an hour late - please squeeze me in!"

Ladies, we all know the importance of investing in our hair. After all, it's the crown we never take off.

So it goes without saying that your relationship with your hairdresser should be around the top five on your list of healthy interactions.

Here are words that should never leave your lips when speaking to the hair god you entrust your royal brow with.

  1. Your prices are through the roof

Never complain about the price if you’re getting something done at the hands of an expert. It’s like going to a fancy restaurant and complaining about the price but savouring every bite of the meal. What exactly is the point?

  1. I’m running an hour late – please squeeze me in!

Hairdressers are on a tight schedule and often don’t even have the time to take a lunch break. Missing your allotted slot will throw their entire schedule off course. So girl, please get your life together and make that much-needed hair appointment on time!


  1. No, no – not like that. I want you to cut it like this

Your hair is in the hands of an expert and there’s a reason you’re not the one with scissors in hand. If you didn’t attend hair school or receive any form of formal education in hair styling, leave the hair-cutting to the professionals.

  1. Uh, yeah… I like it (but you actually don’t)

We’ve all experienced this before; where you walk out of a hair salon utterly disappointed in the result but reluctant to voice the dissatisfaction. Well, it’s not always about what you say but rather how you say it. Calmly telling your stylist what you’re unhappy about will enable the both of you to come up with a solution together.


  1. Why can’t I achieve this look at home?

It’s simple: you’re doing it by yourself. The angles from which you’re doing it is different and so is your equipment. So instead of annoyingly asking why your hairstyle doesn’t come in a homemade version, enquire alternative ways to achieve the look.

"I always say you’re only as good as your tools. So if you’re not using the right kind of product on your hair, you’re not going to have the same kind of results that I’m doing," says Ted Gibson, a well-known American stylist.

  1. I don’t have a picture of the look I want, but I’ll describe it

You might think you’re crystal clear in your description but your hairdresser might interpret it in a completely different way. The best thing would be to send them a picture of the look you want in advance already. That way they’ll even be able to tell you why they think it might not work for you and offer you an alternative.



  1. I desperately need a haircut – but not too much, please!

The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut ‘em – contrary to promise-filled advertisements of split-end serums and shampoos that offer an alternative to that dreaded scissor. No hairdresser worth their salt is going to send you off with poorly chopped hair, so trust them to do their job. Hair grows back, anyway.

  1. Why do you do it like this? My former hairdresser used to…

Just like you wouldn’t compare a new lover to an old one, it’s better you steer clear of doing this with your hairstylists. “We’re all different and we work very differently," says Amber Maynard, who’s styled the likes of Demi Lovato and Hilary Duff. "It makes the artist uncomfortable and they’re not able to do what they are good at.
