Emma Stone: I was obsessed!

Emma Stone has achieved “such completeness” in her latest role.

The Help actress is about to make her Broadway debut in Cabaret as Sally Bowles. For the 25-year-old, the role is the realisation of a childhood dream. “I’ve wanted to play Sally Bowles since I was 10, when I saw Natasha Richardson in Cabaret,” she told Vanity Fair. “It’s unusual for young actresses to get such completeness in a role. Sally is vulnerable, tragic, funny, unlikable, heartbreaking. And then she gets whacked across the face with an epiphany.” The revival of the classic show will be helmed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall. Emma will take over from former Dawson’s Creek star Michelle Williams on November 11 and she couldn’t be more excited.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever been so truly obsessed with a character or a story’

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so truly obsessed with a character or a story,” she added. “I can’t believe this is actually happening!”

This is the star’s second attempt at playing Sally as she was the original choice for the part but had to withdraw as she felt she couldn’t dedicate herself to it 100 per cent around her other acting commitments. These included Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and she recently admitted how heartbreaking she found it to turn her back on her dream role.

“It was painful... I’d said goodbye to the idea of ever playing Sally on Broadway, and it upset me; it really upset me,” she sighed to the New York Times.

“There was one day on the schedule where I would land from Tokyo in the morning and have enough time to make it to perform in that afternoon’s matinee. I realized that this schedule would turn the dream of playing Sally into a kind of nightmare. It felt like forcing something that wouldn’t fit.”
