Emma Watson has always known fame is a "double-edged sword".

The 24-year-old actress was thrust into the limelight before she was a teenager when she was cast as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise. Although it's been a great ride, Emma has tried hard to retain some kind of normalcy in her life. "I’ve just always been aware that it was a bit of a double-edged sword. I think I never really thought necessarily I’d become an actress or become famous," she told Total Film magazine.

'I’ve just always been aware that it was a bit of a double-edged sword'

"It’s something I felt very passive in. It was something that happened to me. They came to my school. They saw me and they took photographs of me. I was taken up to London [UK] to audition."

Although Emma must have had a special something to land the coveted role in the wizard franchise alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, it didn't feel that way. She always worried that she wasn't being judged on her talent alone and wants to push herself to prove she did deserve it.

"I just happened to be picked up and put in one of the biggest film franchises of all time. I wanted to feel active in what happened to me in my life," she explained.

"I wanted to be able to move myself into a place where I felt like I was driving my career and my life, rather than just responding to things that happened to me. I wanted to try to make it my own."

Emma's proved there is more to her than just looking pretty time and time again. She took time out from acting to study at both Brown University in Rhode Island and the prestigious Oxford University in England. She's also spoken out about being a feminist as part of her role as the UN's Ambassador for Women.

All of that is important to her, and she's going to use it to boost her career going forward.

"It feels like I was building a portfolio over the last five, six years," she said.

"Now I feel like I’m ready to really be carrying films. I’m really just ready now to focus on my career full time and go full steam ahead. It’s exciting at the moment."
