End of the road for Eskom CEO

Brian Dames has resigned as CEO of Eskom and will vacate his position in March next year.

Dames, appointed chief executive in July 2010 and succeeding Jacob Maroga, was previously head of the utility’s generation division.  "I was not pressurised by anyone to step down, it's my own decision," he said at a media briefing.

His contract is rumoured to have expired and is not being renewed.  Some believe Dames’ resignation has a lot to do with the Medupi Power Station, which has been plagued with technical delays and labour unrest.

Zola Tsotsi, chairman of the Eskom board, said the process to find Dames’ successor was underway and “during this time the Eskom board and Mr Dames will work together to ensure a smooth transition to a new chief executive.”
