Engaged - so let's party!

If you didn’t know better you’d think a wedding was going down here. A marquee has been erected on the verandah of the plush Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria and everything is decorated in white.

Romantic tunes are being played on a grand piano, glamorous guests dressed in designer gear are milling around and a dinner fit for royalty is on the cards. Then there’s that other essential: the cake – and this one is a heart-shaped ice-cream concoction complete with an image of the happy couple.

Lovely Angelique Gerber (27) of 7de Laan fame and her partner of the past four years, Ben-G van Niekerk (26), are  celebrating their engagement.

And as bubbly Angelique puts it, “When the man of your dreams slips your dream ring on your finger it’s time for the party of the year.”

When Ben-G treated her to a week’s holiday in Mauritius before Christmas Angelique, who plays Clara in 7de Laan, was none the wiser. Meanwhile he secretly visited a jeweller with a picture of a diamond ring Angelique had shown him.

For three days he waited for the right moment – God would guide him, he says. By sunset on the third day he couldn’t wait any longer.

Angelique was queuing for pancakes when Ben-G told her he’d arranged with someone to take photographs of them on the beach.

Ben-G had planned to take her to a remote part of the beach but when she spotted the emotional state he was in he immediately went on bended knee.

“She went mad,” he says with a laugh. “I had to calm her down before I could ask the question.”

When Angelique woke the next morning Ben-G was asked to propose again. Subsequently he had to ask her to be his wife at least four times a day. She didn’t want the joy of it to stop.

The wedding won’t be anything like the engagement party. “We want to have a more intimate wedding at a beach resort on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast,” Angelique  says. And they want to do it this year.

Afterwards Ben-G will spoil his bride with a honeymoon in New York and Las Vegas.
