Nicole Richie is returning to acting after landing a role in a new U.S. sitcom.

The reality TV star-turned-designer has been cast in a comedy called Great News, created by 30 Rock writer Tracey Wigfield and co-executive produced by her former bosses Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.

Inspired by Tracey's life, Great News is a workplace comedy centring around a woman whose relationship with her mother is tested when her mum becomes a new intern at the cable news company she works at.

Nicole joins the show after producers decided to recast the role of Portia, who was played by Kimrie Lewis-Davis in the pilot. Richie will now play the hip yet sometimes clueless co-host of The Breakdown, a show within Great News.

This marks the first regular TV role in a scripted series for Nicole, who has had guest cameos on shows such as Empire and Chuck. But the 34 year old is no stranger to being in front of the camera, after finding fame with former best friend Paris Hilton on reality TV show The Simple Life.

She most recently wrapped the second season of her semi-scripted comedy show Candidly Nicole, a series originally launched as a web series inspired by her Twitter posts, but turned into a full-fledged cable programme.

Nicole previously gushed about how working on Candidly Nicole doesn't actually feel like work, telling Vanity Fair, "I absolutely love doing this show. It started out as a web series and it was such a small set. A lot of the people that were working on it were my friends. And I did that just so I could feel comfortable, because I was trying something new.

"When it turned into a TV show - and (network) VH1 has been so great with me - they wanted to keep that vibe. So it's still a pretty intimate set in that everyone gets along and we're all friends. It's just the best job."

Great News is slated to premiere in America early next year.
