It was a grand affair when around 65 000 south Africans lined the streets of Sandton to bid farewell to the Bokke at Nelson Mandela Square Last week.

The event was broadcast on big screens around the square for fans that could not get inside the square to see their heroes.

It was attended by who’s who in local entertainment and sport including Jeremy Mansfield (who brought along his Daughter), Khanyi Mbau, former spring Chester Williams and Pieter Hendricks.

Thousands of fans cheered when John Smit led his team to the podium. The team was visibly overcome by the hugeness of the event.

Cries of beast echoed when the crowd was asked who they favourite player was.  A special Harvard aircraft also made the day extra special by flying over Sandton.

The crowed was also entertained by the Graham Watkins Project, Lavuvuzela, freshly ground, Danny K to name a few. Afrikaans music star Jay had some members of the crowd in singing along (and some in tears) when he sang the National anthem (no Ard Matthews gaffes here).

The springboks then walked to Gautrain station where they boded the train to O.R Tambo Airport.
