Baking is a fun and satisfying activity - especially when you're left with lots of tasty treats to share with family and friends (and eat yourself). But it's also a sure-fire way to ruin a diet. Nut flours

Many people have ditched cow's milk in favour of nut varieties, with almond and hazelnut proving some of the most popular. But did you know nuts can also be used to make flour? Most are made solely from the nut, meaning you get all those nutritional benefits. Say hello to protein, vitamins and minerals. Nut flour works best in crusts, cookies and cakes.

Bean flours

Again, beans are a popular alternative among the health conscious. Often they are used as a meat substitute, bulking up Mexican dishes. Chickpea or garbanzo bean flours have a flavour similar to hummus and work best in savoury crackers. You'll benefit from fibre, protein and folate.

Oat flour

This week saw GBBO's contestants making amazing sculptures out of bread. If all that loaf loving has inspired you, try quick bread made from oat flour. It's really easy to make this yourself, as chef, dietician, and Academy of Dietetics spokesperson Sara Haas, R.D.N., explained to the website. Just put some oats in a blender and push the pulse setting. Oats are packed with soluble fibre, which promotes heart health, but be aware the quantities will need to be a little different to regular flour recipes. Enjoy experimenting!

Coconut flour

If you don't use coconut already, where have you been hiding? Whether it's oil, butter or water - health nuts everywhere are obsessed! Coconut flour is gluten free and makes a great coating for meat and fish.
