Five days, five songs

Our music blogger has five songs to celebrate the first work week of spring.

It’s the first week of spring! A time for new beginnings, blossoms and sunshine. Spring is happy, bouncy and filled with sounds of birds tweeting . . . at least, that’s how it seems in the movies. It means summer is around the corner! This week I’ve picked five songs for the first five weekdays of spring.

Did you see Ú2 play Beautiful Day live in South Africa? Its a big, fat rock anthem and the best way to kick-start spring.

George Harrison, the bearded Beatle, wrote Here Comes the Sun in 1969 while frustrated with the corporate drama at the Beatles’ record company Apple Records. It’s my favourite Beatles hit.

Jimmy Cliff’s I Can See Clearly Now was originally recorded by Johnny Nash, but I reckon the Jimmy Cliff version has a much better summer vibe

I was privileged to meet the Beach Boys in Cape Town a few years back. Their harmonies are unparalleled. No one comes close. Here’s their Warmth of the Sun.

Originally by Bob Marley in 1971, this 1999 remix of Sun is Shining by Funkstar deluxe is the perfect way to get into your weekend. Happy Friday!
