Five things to watch this weekend

Ease your way into the weekend with the heartwarming story of a boy determined to follow his dream, enjoy a lazy brunch at home while watching the cricket on Saturday and round off the weekend with a thriller that’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Friday 29 November

Billy Elliot SABC3 8.30 pm You may have seen him looking all grown-up recently playing a gladiator slave in the film The Eagle, but this touching movie about a miner’s son who prefers ballet to boxing was Jamie Bell’s breakthrough role.  Bangkok Dangerous 10.55 pm There are a few things we know about Nicolas Cage – he’s got bad hair, he’s got crazy eyes and almost all the characters he plays sound the same. But there’s no denying his movies are great fun to watch. In this one he plays a hitman who’s in Hong Kong for a job and ends up falling in love.

Saturday 30 November

SA vs Pakistan ODI cricket SABC3 9.30 am This is it: our boys head onto the pitch against Pakistan for the very last time in this tour. Hopefully we’ll make it a whitewash!

Sunday 1 December

Top Gear USA SABC3 5 pm Move over, Jeremy Clarkson and Co – pro racer and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is heading to the UK to try out a Morgan sportscar. What makes it so special? Oh, just the fact that it goes way faster than 250kph and is made from wood!

Alex Cross

M-Net 8.05 pm

Remember Matthew Fox from Party of Five and Lost? He’s almost unrecognisable in this movie and no wonder – he lost 20 kg of body fat in order to play psychopathic serial killer Picasso. Although he hated the tough exercise programme he says it was empowering to realise “just how much control we have over our bodies”. Tyler Perry stars as former FBI agent Alex Cross.
