From 2005 to 2008 BComm financial planning, in 2009 a postgraduate diploma in financial planning, and from 2012 to 2013 a postgraduate diploma in sustainable development.

Why did you choose business development management?

Business development means different things in different sectors and at different companies. In the investment industry in which I work it offers me the opportunity to be involved in various projects across a large spectrum of business services. It allows you to focus on not only one skill, such as client service, research or analytics, but requires you to develop and employ expertise in all of these. It’s a fast-paced, challenging and constantly changing environment.

What are the perks and downfalls of this career?

One of the greatest perks is that there’s not only one way to get the job done – you have the freedom to craft your own approach as long as the goals and objectives are reached. The flexibility and wide spectrum of tasks also keep the job from becoming boring.

Which personality traits would suit this career?

You have to be able to act as your own manager. You should be goal- as well as people-orientated, and very driven.

What advice do you have for prospective business development managers?

Hard work will get you a long way, so will trust and relationship-building skills.

What subjects do you need to study for this career?

Mathematics. Accounting or economics would also help.
