Menzi Ngubane found it emotionally draining reliving his illness on the show

Not too long ago he was at death’s door. When Menzi Ngubane ended up in hospital with chronic kidney failure late last year it was touch and go whether he’d pull through.

But the Generations star is a fighter – in fact he got through his medical ordeal with such courage that the soapie bosses recently decided to make his character in the show, Sibusiso “Ngamla” Dlomo, experience the same thing so he could serve as an inspiration to viewers.

But while Menzi was up for the challenge, his fans initially weren’t too keen on the storyline.

“They wrote and phoned in, complaining the writers were cruel and were taking advantage of me – but that’s not the case at all,” he says. “I was fully on board. The producer called me; we discussed the idea of bringing in my kidney disease and I agreed.”
