Keep dull and damaged hair at bay with our handy hair tips.

A quick fix won’t help get rid of dry hair – you need to get to the root of the problem, says trichologist Dr John Gray. Here he gives his top tips for keeping your tresses in tip-top shape.

Want to know the cause of your dry hair? Ask yourself the following:

  • How processed is your hair?
  • How many times a week do you wash and heat style your hair?
  • How often do you condition and add a moisture treatment to your hair-care regime?
  • How often do you make an appointment with a professional stylist to keep split ends trimmed and your hair shaped in an attractive and easy-to-maintain style?

Hair-raising treatments

Chemically processing your hair physically breaks down the strong structural protein called keratin. This affects your hair’s ability to control the flow of moisture in and out of the strand, damaging hair and making it porous.

“Condition, condition, condition,” advises Gray. “Hair must be conditioned after every wash. Protection against moisture loss works best after working a conditioning cure or masque treatment through the hair.”

Wash ’n rinse

Subjecting you hair to daily washing and styling can result in a loss of moisture. Heat styling strips and removes natural oils from hair leaving it dehydrated and prone to breakage.

“After washing, towel-dry your hair,” says Gray. “This is important as the heat in styling instruments, like a hairdryer, can reach temperatures of 140 °C, boiling the water in your hair.

Dry spell

Frequent washing and styling means hair needs consistent conditioning, but make sure your products contain effective moisturising and conditioning agents, such as glycerol, panthenol and silk and wheat proteins.

Visit your hairdresser

“Ensure you pay regular visits to a professional hair stylist,” says Gray. “With over 100 000 strands of hair on the average human head, two centimetres of split ends actually equates to two kilometres of damaged tips. By maintaining the right length of hair, your style will be easy to control and maintain, and ultimately your hair will be enabled to hold its moisture content.”
