The royal, who is married to Queen Elizabeth, 88, shows no signs of slowing down as he gets older, and has a bumper schedule of official engagements this month.

The Duke of Edinburgh is Britain's longest serving consort and also the longest serving partner of a reigning monarch.

The prince and queen have just returned from France, where they celebrated the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

He is set to join the queen today for a garden party at Buckingham Palace in London, where 8 000 guests will attend celebrations to mark the day.

Tomorrow, the royal, who is the founder of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Association, will then host a World Fellowship 27th anniversary dinner at Windsor Castle.

This will be followed by an overseas trip to Germany on Thursday where he will visit Fallingbostel in his role as Royal Colonel, of The Highlanders, Fourth Battalion, The Royal Regiment Scotland, and he will hand out campaign medals.

The prince will then go on to Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre in Sussex, before the Trooping the Colour ceremony kicks off for the queen's official birthday parade.

The couple are also expected to attend Royal Ascot next week.
