Happy Elvis not-so-blue

He may be the winner of season six but Elvis Blue isn’t just another Idol. He proved this by releasing a CD within 30 days of winning the popular singing competition – something no other Idols winner in South Africa or abroad has managed.

The CD, simply titled Elvis Blue, went gold after selling more than 20 000 copies within 29 days of its release.

Elvis received the news while on holiday in the Tsitsikamma National Park on the Garden Route with wife Cherize and one-year-old daughter Lila. “I walked around with a smile for four days,” he says.

Our impression of the 32-year-old rocker when we first met him in the Idols house was of a down-to-earth, friendly, level-headed guy – and it seems nothing has changed since he scooped 64 per cent of the votes in the competition and was named Idols winner a few months ago.

Although he gained instant fame after winning Idols Elvis’ road to success in the music industry has been long and hard. As singer Jan Hoogendyk – his real name – he struggled for years to make a living as a musician.

“After five CDs on which I’d pinned all my hopes turned out to be total failures it’s a special feeling to sell something for a change.”

The biggest change in his life is that he’s no longer struggling financially, Elvis says with a broad smile. “And people rock up when I’m on stage! The weirdest thing is that I’m singing the same songs I’ve always sung.”

Elvis and Cherize also had to make a few adjustments in their marriage to cope with the fame and attention that followed after winning Idols. “I’m often away from home and I perform all over. It’s tough on both of us. I can’t imagine being able to do it with another woman.”

He and his family recently moved back to Johannesburg from George and now rent a house in Linden so they can be close to their families.
