He knew he'd die like Elvis

She was curiously sad all day and kept weeping for no apparent reason. After work she could barely eat so she crept into bed and watched TV to take her mind off things.

It was then a friend knocked on her door with news that shocked her to her core: her ex-husband, Michael Jackson, was dead.

“I was floored,” Lisa Marie Presley (43), only child of late rock ’n roll icon Elvis Presley, recently revealed in what she called her first and last interview about Michael.

She told talk-show host Oprah Winfrey how the King of Pop predicted he would one day die just like Elvis, the King of Rock.

Soon after Michael’s death on 25 June 2009 she watched on TV as he was put into an ambulance and driven away with sirens wailing, and recalled a talk they’d had years before in his library at his Neverland Ranch.

“We were sitting by the fire and he was telling me he was afraid of ending up like my father. He was always asking me about when he’d died, how it had happened, when it had happened and where. He said, ‘I feel like I’m going to end up the same way’.”

Traces of 14 stimulants and depressants were found in Elvis’ blood when he was found dead in his Graceland home in August 1977. He was 42 and Lisa Marie was nine.

After Michael’s death at age 50 it was found he had died of an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol.

His doctor, Conrad Murray, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, although he denies guilt. His trial is scheduled to start in May.

Not only does it seem that Michael’s sombre prediction about his death has come true, ironically the house in Los Angeles where he breathed his last is directly opposite a mansion where Elvis once lived.

Lisa Marie met Michael in 1993. At the time she was estranged from her husband of five years, musician Danny Keough, the father of her two eldest children, Riley (21) and Benjamin (18).

Michael was an amazing, dynamic person and to her he was like a drug, she says. They were sitting by the fire in his library one day when he pulled out a 10-carat diamond ring and asked her to marry him.

In May 1994, only 20 days after her divorce, they quietly tied the knot in the Dominican Republic.

Their marriage made headlines worldwide, especially after their passionate kiss on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards four months later.

“He knew I didn’t love that,” Lisa Marie says. She was so nervous she gripped Michael’s hand until it turned blue.

Lisa Marie says Michael knew how to manipulate the media, which sometimes made her wonder if he really loved her.

“But now I understand it better. For him the manipulation was a survival technique.”
