He was a hot favourite from the moment he sang his first notes to the judges at the Durban auditions.

Little did we know then that as we watched Khaya Mthethwa perform his heart out he was auditioning without the blessing of his pastor father.

Music wasn’t a real future, his dad had told him – but Themba Mthethwa has come around since. He’s now 25-year-old Khaya’s greatest supporter and when his boy won Idols he was the proudest father in the land.

There’s no doubt Khaya was a popular winner of the eighth season of the talent search competition. He received unprecedented backing, with celebrities such as actress Minnie Dlamini and TV personalities Sizwe Dhlomo and Bonang Matheba hosting voting parties, giving away airtime and urging their hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers to vote for Khaya.

Yet, even with the overwhelming support he received, the diminutive former project manager didn’t believe he’d win and collapsed on his knees in gratitude and relief when host ProVerb called out his name.
