Joost's loved ones celebrated the day in a way the late rugby hero would have loved.

Joost van der Westhuizen would have celebrated his 46th birthday on 20 February.

So Amor Vittone and their children Kylie (10) and Jordan (13) decided to mark the occasion in a really special way -- a party, surrounded by all the late rugby hero's loved ones.

Joost's estranged wife shared pictures of the bittersweet event on Facebook, with the simple caption "Joost's 46 birthday celebration".

The heartrending photos show a beautiful cake featuring an image of Joost with Amor, Kylie and Jordan, along with the younsgters blowing out the candles.

Joost passed away on 6 February after a long battle with motor neuron disease.

Amor's mother Delyse was also there.

Last year, the family also came together for Joost's special day -- not knowing it would be his last.

At the time, Joost was part of a medical trial for a drug that may have helped combat the disease.

The former rugby star was one of a group of South African MND sufferers who had been given access to the drug GM604 on compassionate grounds.

“It gives hope,” Joost said in an exclusive interview with YOU last year, communicating via the device that allows him to write down his answers using his eyes. “Not just for me but for everyone with MND.”

“I’m hoping to talk. I want to hold my kids again. I just want to see my kids grow up and be happy.”
