UK media reports that tradition dictates that royal gun salutes will be fired across the capital marking her ascension.

Always one to keep her private life private, the Queen will spend the momentous occasion at her home in Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

She became Queen in 1953 after the death of her father King George VI in 1952. Her son Prince of Wales, Charles is next in line to the throne.
