Joan Rivers: Five things you didn’t know, and her five best celeb quotes

Joan Rivers, the comedienne who said what everyone else was thinking, passed away yesterday from complications following surgery.

Her real name is Joan Alexandra Molinsky

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 8 1933. Her parents were Russian Jewish immigrants, and her father, a doctor, apparently had a great sense of humour. She chose Joan Rivers as her stage name.

She performed as part of a comedic musical trio called Jim, Jake, and Joan in 1964.

She performed for the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II

“You’re a little more careful. And I did slip, and I said the word ‘f***.’ And I said it and I turned to her in the box and I said, ‘Behead me now.’”

She conquered television

Her first TV appearance was on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson, who she called “an amazing mentor”. She became his first female co-host in 1983.

Like everyone else, she made fun of herself for her plastic surgeries.

“I wish I had a twin so I could know what I’d look like without plastic surgery.”

Joan’s sharp and often biting sense of humour meant that no celebrity was same from her criticism. Here are five of her snarkiest comments:

Jennifer Lawrence

“I love that she’s telling everyone how wrong it is to worry about retouching and body image, and meanwhile, she has been touched up more than a choir boy at the Vatican.”

Kate Winslet

“If Kate Winslet had dropped a few pounds, the Titanic would never have sunk.”

“What’s her song… ‘Rolling In The Deep’? She should add ‘fried chicken.’”

“When she lifted her arm, I thought it was Tina Turner in her armpit.”

North West

“That baby is ugly… I’ve never seen a 6-month-old so desperately in need of a waxing.”
